A metro bakery is back open after closing for a week due to COVID.

After dealing with supply shortages and putting pandemic precautions in place, one of the owners of Katiebug's Sips and Sweets tested positive just after the Christmas holiday.

"We were being super careful because this is our busiest season of the year," said owner Katie Morgan.

But after closing Katiebug's Sips and Sweets for the holidays, Katie went to a Christmas Eve service.

"I was wearing a mask and sitting far away, but a bunch of people tested positive from there a few days later," said Katie.

After losing a family member to COVID, the whole Morgan family is vaccinated along with their staff.

But Katie still got sick, at first feeling fatigued and even losing her voice.

"Then got chills and a fever day two, and that's when I tested for COVID," said Katie

She took an at-home rapid test, to her surprise it came back negative.

"But my fever and chills got way worse on day three, and my little sister had me test again and I was positive," said Katie.

Now, Katie is still in isolation out of an abundance of caution. She has tested negative but still has lingering side effects like weakness and headaches.

Reflecting on the last few weeks, the small business owner told News 9 she never realized the at-home test directions prompt one person to take both tests in the box.

"Test is intended to be used twice over two to three days," Katie read out loud from the test's directions.

Retesting is something OU Health's Chief COVID Officer Dr. Dale Bratzler recommends if someone is having symptoms, especially if they're getting a negative result with a rapid test.

"If you are symptomatic and you have COVID it may well become positive in the next couple of days," said Dr. Bratzler.

He said PCR tests are very sensitive, and that's what Katie's family ended up rushing out to get.

"The specific one we went to, it took five days," said co-owner Melissa Morgan.

Even though it took time, the rest of the family tested negative.

The small business now has to deal with staffing their business. As they reopen some employees that were also exposed over the Christmas holiday are still at home.

But the Morgan's aren't letting their guard down and are ramping up testing while the new variant spreads.

"Every week we are going to test until things kind of dial down," said Melissa.
