Several folks that work and go to school here in OKC can expect to see changes as we enter the first week of 2022. Many of the protocols put in place are to help fight the spread of the Omicron variant.

Just like last year, we're entering the new year with another surge of COVID-19 cases. We end the year with nearly 4,000 COVID-19 cases here in Oklahoma.

Hospitals in the area said they are either currently at capacity in their intensive care units or are regularly running out of beds. On top of having limited resources, they say they're having to battle the surge in new COVID-19 variant cases.

Starting Monday, Mercy hospital is addressing this issue. They're updating their visitation policy to have one visitor per patient in all hospitals, clinics, and other patient care facilities. Pediatric and obstetric patients, we are allowed up to two visitors.

Schools are making changes as well. Millwood Public Schools announced they're adding new testing guidelines in addition to the mask requirement that is already in place. Superintendent Cecilia Robinson-Woods announced via Facebook that every Wednesday there will be random COVID-19 testing.

“So community health will come in they will conduct these random tests for us. The test will also be available for parents who just want to have their child tested for covid. We will be able to do that at school,” Robinson-Woods said.

This will be open to students, staff, and families.

Oklahoma City Public Schools is also making changes to the start of the Spring semester. If anyone tests positive for the virus, they will have to quarantine for five days instead of ten.

After the five-day isolation, students and staff can return if their symptoms are gone. Everyone is required to wear a mask. If you're exposed, OKCPS said you can come to school wearing a mask and get tested five days after exposure.
