Children Taken Out Of State After OKC Police Arrest Mother On Complaints Of Child Neglect, DUI

An Oklahoma City mother was placed behind bars on Sunday on complaints of child neglect and DUI.

Her children and a witness told officers that was not the first time the children were left to fend for themselves. 

Police were called to 27-year-old Perla Aguilar’s southwest Oklahoma City home just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday to check on her four children who were home alone.

“They ranged in age from an infant all the way to 9 years old,” said Master Sgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.

The 9-year-old child told officers she was left to care for her siblings. She indicated Aguilar was at a bar and had been gone for a while. She told police Aguilar leaves them alone all the time.

“The 9-year-old was somewhat overwhelmed, unable to take care of the others,” said Knight. 

According to the report, the girl left in charge was attempting to feed the hungry 9-month-old pizza and said she did not know what to feed the baby. While the officers were at the home, they noted Aguilar pulled into the driveway.

“She stepped out of the vehicle and officers recognized immediately that she was intoxicated,” said Knight. “She smelled of alcohol, her speech was slurred, she kept repeating herself.”

Aguilar told officers she was drinking alcohol at the bar where she works and that it was normal for her to drink at work. She also admitted she has been in trouble before for neglecting her children.

Police contacted DHS and arrested Aguilar on complaints of DUI and child neglect.

“The children were placed with a relative who was driving from Texas to pick them up and take them to a safe place,” said Knight.

Aguilar has been charged with public intoxication in another county but did not have any other DUI charges. She has not been formally charged yet by the Oklahoma County district attorney.
