The holiday season is typically a time of joy and abundance. But for thousands of Oklahomans struggling with hunger, the holidays are one of the most difficult periods of the year.

To support these neighbors in need, the Wheeler District partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to host a canned food drive.

Members of the community dropped off 385 cans and boxes of food at the Wheeler Ferris Wheel from Nov. 12 to Nov. 27. Each person who donated two food items received a free Ferris wheel ride ticket.

“This food drive has become an annual tradition in the Wheeler District, and we are continually overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the people of Oklahoma City,” said Ashley Terry, the district’s vice president of development. “Thank you to everyone who rallied together to help our neighbors in need this year.”

Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is the largest private hunger relief organization in Oklahoma.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Wheeler District and its visitors, the Regional Food Bank will be able to provide meals to even more Oklahomans living with hunger this winter,” said Stacy Dykstra, chief executive officer of the Regional Food Bank. “This support will be vital as Oklahomans continue to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising cost of groceries.”
