Hundreds of people enjoyed a free Thanksgiving feat at Tulsa's John 3:16 Mission.

It's the first of three free dinners the mission will serve this week.

Volunteers said this year has been tough on everyone, and for those without a family or place to go, the shelter wants to provide some comfort this year.

A full plate, slice of pie, and a smile were served to people grateful for a hot meal.

"If you have something in your stomach you feel rich," said Michael Merrell.

Michael Merrell has been in the John 3:16 program for a few months. He said it's changed his life after struggling with addiction and feeling like there was nowhere to turn.

"I felt like there was no way out," Merrell said. "I came here and feel like I have a family again."

Merrell is now becoming a leader at the Mission and helping people receive their Thanksgiving meal.

Reverend Steve Whitaker said they've already given out thousands of baskets to families and this meal is another way to show love.

"We're excited to have everyone here as our guests," he said, "to share our compassion and love for them."

Rev. Whitaker said for people who have so little, a meal like this can make all the difference.

"When you have nothing, and Thanksgiving comes, this year it's important we love on people the best we can."

Merrell said he's getting ready to graduate from the mission's program and urges people to come in and get help if they need it.

"They serve so many people here," Merrell said. "It gives us an opportunity to change lives and it happens over turkey and dressing."

They will serve meals Wednesday and Thursday night at 6:30.

They're also giving out more baskets Wednesday.

They said everyone is invited to come and take a seat at their table.
