TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa Police say 19-year-old Rashad Thomas is in custody on Tuesday morning after he shot an officer in the arm during a fight Monday afternoon. Police say the officer who was shot in the hand has been released from the hospital and is expected to be okay.

The name of the injured officer has not yet been released.

TPD told News On 6 that an officer found a gun inside of the bathroom at a gas station near 61st and Peoria. They say the officer went to confront Rashad Thomas about leaving the gun there, but a fight quickly broke out between the officer and suspect over another gun that was already inside Thomas’ waistband.

Tulsa police say the officer was shot in the hand while the two men were fighting over the gun.

According to TPD, the injured officer was able to handcuff Thomas, but while the second officer was helping the injured officer, Thomas got up and ran away.

Tulsa police surrounded the area and blocked off several streets while searching for Thomas. They later found the suspect still handcuffed inside a laundry room at the Wedge Wood apartments.

Tulsa Police Cpt. Richard Meulenberg said the quick response of everyone involved made a huge difference in the end result of this scene.

“Sometimes when it really matters, we have to get out here to help find someone who is dangerous, we have to get out here and protect the community, protect the officers, and that’s what happens we come from all over the city to come make sure we can do our job well,” Meulenberg said.

Tulsa police said Thomas will likely face charges of aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest.
