TU basketball is just weeks away from getting the season started and the excitement for both the women's and men's teams is brewing.

Angie Nelp enters her first season as the head coach for the University of Tulsa women’s basketball team. Keeping it local is the team’s identity: 10 of the 12 players are from Oklahoma.

"Oklahoma is a great state for basketball and being able to have players from here from home is huge," said Nelp.

One of those players is Tulsan Maya Mayberry, who averaged 14 points a game last season.

“I'm excited for what this year has in store and I'm excited to play for Coach Angie,” Mayberry said. “She just makes it easy, just play hard and play fast.”

As for as the men, Jeriah Horne returns for a second stint at TU after playing last year at Colorado. Darien Jackson, one of the team’s top scorers, is looking forward to seeing the group play together.

"I'm really excited to get with this group of guys that are here right now because this is a special group, and I feel like we can go pretty far if we buy into what the coaching staff has for us," said Jackson.

Both the men's and women’s basketball programs at the University of Tulsa are putting last season behind them. Their number one goal is to make an impact right away for both programs.

"We've got more skilled, even though we have a lot of new guys, we have some older guys this time in age,” TU men’s head coach Frank Haith said. “In college basketball, that’s key.”
