1 Dead, 2 Injured After Vehicle Crashes Into Water In NE OKC

One person is dead and an investigation is underway on how a crash sent a car into a pond Monday morning.

The crash happened about 11:20 a.m. Monday near Northeast 23rd and Sooner Road.

Officials said there were three victims: two had non-life-threatening injuries and the third died at the hospital.

"They made every effort they could to save this person," said Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

Fulkerson said OCFD received the call for the crash around 11:21 Monday morning.

"When we arrived, there was one vehicle in the water. There were three people in the vehicle when it left the roadway and went into the water," Fulkerson said.

Fulkerson said two of the three were able to escape the sinking car.

"We were told they got out through the sunroof," said Fulkerson.

With one person still in the car, the fire department's dive team members quickly got in the water and pulled out the victim.

"It was quick, which was pretty remarkable because zero visibility under water and they were out 20 yards offshore and about 25 or 30 feet deep were being told," said Fulkerson.

Fulkerson estimated the victim was under water for about 40 minutes.

"With the length of time submerged and the temperature of the water combined the estimation is that we had an hour, possibly an hour, to revive that victim," he said.

Fulkerson said she was unconscious when they were able to get her out.

"Aggressive resuscitative efforts were started the moment we got the victim up onto the roadway," said Fulkerson.

Police have confirmed the victim was an elderly woman, but they are not releasing her name yet.

Oklahoma City police officers are working on the crash investigation to determine how it happened.
