Garfield County deputies arrested an Enid resident after he allegedly drove his car onto train tracks and attempted to board a train.
“After talking to the guy, I just think he wasn’t in the right state of mind and needed some help,” said Deputy David Hadley, who responded to the scene just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 16.
The person who called 911 worked with the train operator and told dispatchers a man, later identified as 27-year-old Edgar Mayoral, parked in front of their train.
“A male just parked his blue jeep on our tracks,” the caller said. “Our train went into (an) emergency (stop) to avoid hitting it and he got out the jeep and has now climbed on to our locomotive.”
When deputies arrived, Hadley said the vehicle was on fire and the suspect was nearby.
“He wasn’t scared, he wasn’t freaking out at all. He was more along the lines of, ‘I just want a ride,’” Hadley said. “After talking to the guy, I just think he wasn’t in the right state of mind and needed some help.”
Mayoral was not combative and did not resist arrest. Body camera footage shows him talking to deputies.
“I stopped the train,” Mayoral said in the footage.
Deputies found a hatchet and a single bullet after a search of Mayoral.
“We were unable to locate any kind of firearm that he could have possessed at the time,” Hadley said.
Garfield County prosecutors charged Mayoral on Tuesday with four criminal counts, including third-degree arson, property damage, and trespassing on a railway. Thursday a judge set a bond of $7,500.
“I haven’t had a call like this in my career. This is one of those calls that just makes you think,” Hadley said.
