A metro family received shocking news when they were told their loved on was shot and killed Monday night in front of his northeast Oklahoma City home.

Oklahoma City police said the investigation was still early, and they have not made any arrests or identified a suspect or suspects.

Investigators identified the victim as 64-year-old Albert Thompson. His loved ones said it was a senseless shooting and they want the perpetrator caught.

“What’s the purpose, like why?” said Sufeesha Mathis, the victim’s niece. “Why would you do that? Because he was a nice man. He was a family man.”

Mathis found out Tuesday morning her uncle was shot and killed and said she rushed from Edmond to where he lived. She was still in shock when she spoke to News 9.

“Just 30 minutes ago, (I) found out what happened to him from my brother,” said Mathis.

Neighbors who heard the gunshots said Thompson died next to his pickup near his home. Police were called late Monday night to the apartments near NE 13th and Walnut Avenue. They said Thompson was shot several times.

His family was not sure if the motive was robbery or something else.

“You don’t have to steal, you don’t have to rob, you don’t have to take from anybody,” said Mathis. “I’m pretty sure whatever he had or felt he had that they needed, I’m sure if you asked him, he would have given it to you.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing and they are looking into motives.

“Right now, the investigation is still in its early stages,” said Sgt. Dillon Quirk, Oklahoma City Police Department. “Police are unclear what exactly occurred but they’re doing their best to piece together what happened.”

Mathis and her brother were told several people were gathered near their uncle's pickup when he came outside to check on the commotion. They said Thompson was not a confrontational man, and most likely, did not even own a gun.

“He would give you the shirt off his back,” said Mathis. “Take you fishing. Like now, it’s coming back. Bringing back emotions and stuff.”

Police ask anyone if they anything or have information about the suspect or suspects to call the homicide tip line at 405-297-1200.
