It’s a girl!
Thursday, the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden welcomed the arrival of the second giraffe calf born at the zoo this summer. The first giraffe calf, Kioni, was born June 3 to 21-year-old Ellie.
Officials said the second calf was born just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, September 15 to first-time mom, 6-year-old Julu.
“Watching Julu grow from a young calf to becoming a mother herself has been a rewarding experience for the Hoofstock team,” said OKC Zoo’s Curator of Hoofstock and Primates, Tracey Dolphin. “We’re proud to welcome these two calves to our animal family as part of the Zoo’s commitment to preserving giraffes for generations to come.”
Zoo officials said the calf stood up in less than an hour after birth and began nursing shortly after, according to a news release.
The calf has not yet been named.
Zoo staff said guests may get a chance to see Julu with her calf in the giraffe habitat within the next few days.
