Former OU Tennis Captain Battling Cancer Set To Be Honored By School’s Athletic Department

The University of Oklahoma’s men’s tennis program is missing an important part of its close-knit family.

Mason Bridegan, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bile duct called cholangiocarcinoma, began treatment last year. However, family members said the treatment has stopped working as the cancer continues to grow. He is currently on hospice care.

"He essentially has a tumor that's sitting on his liver,” Mason’s brother, Tyler Bridegan, said. “It's now impeding all liver function.”

Mason’s brother, Tyler, is working with OU to dedicate a tennis court in honor of his brother.

"When we heard about what's going on with Mason, it's just been really tough,” OU head men’s tennis coach Nick Crowell. “We're just saying prayers for him and his family."

LaFortune Tennis Center in Tulsa is also dedicating a tennis court in Mason’s honor. 

"It's heartbreaking that we're at this point. You always imagine your siblings, you're going to grow old together, at least for a while,” Tyler Bridegan said. “Unfortunately, that isn't the case here.”

"Mason was an unbelievable person, and an unbelievable tennis player,” Crowell said. “He loved the Sooners. He loved his family. He always brought that energy and lit up a room."

A GoFundMe fundraiser for Bridegan’s medical fund benefit has generated more than $50,000 to date.
