Julianne Nguyen is like any 7-year-old when it comes to celebrating her birthday.
When she learned that there are kids that are unable to have birthday parties and don’t receive gifts, she wanted to do something about it.
Julianne is National American Miss Oklahoma Princess, a title she recently won.
“I was super surprised,” Nguyen said. “There was only one person and me on the stage, and when she said the person next to me, I was like, ‘Wow.’”
Part of holding that title is participating in service projects. Nguyen and her mom were figuring out their options for service when Julianne realized she could really help celebrate other kids her age.
“Because some parents don’t have enough money to buy them parties,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen and her mom then learned about Box of Balloons, a national charity with a local chapter here in the metro.
“Essentially, we provide birthday parties to children in need that who wouldn’t otherwise be celebrated,” said Sayde Brooks with the Box of Balloons organization.
The organization provides everything necessary for underprivileged kids to celebrate a birthday party.
“Every box that we supply has the same supplies in it, but it is custom based the age of the child and the theme that they want,” Brooks said. “We provide tableware, decorations, cupcakes, party favors, a party game that they can play, a birthday gift, and a card given from the parent to the child.”
The group is super excited to partner with Nguyen, who is happy about the connection, as well.
Nguyen is inviting everyone out to her decoration and donation event, which will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday at Scissortail Park.
They will create decorations for the boxes and cards. All the supplies will be provided already. They will also accept monetary gifts as well as decorating and party gifts.
