According to reports, Oklahoma City Superintendent Sean McDaniel is expected to announce the mask mandate Friday morning through a news conference.

News 9 was able to get a hold of school board member Mark Mann last Thursday night.

While he did not confirm the mask mandate, he said the school board would back McDaniel in this decision.

"The entire board of the Oklahoma City Public Schools wants to do what's needed to protect our kids and make sure they are in the best position possible to be able to finish out the year in person learning," Mann said.

The reported new mask rules would defy senate bill 658, which prohibits local school districts from requiring face masks.

This week marks the end of the first week for OKCPS students, who have all been encouraged to mask up and get vaccinated.

Superintendent McDaniel told News 9 he thinks the decision over masks should be left up to local school boards.

News 9 will carry Friday morning's news conference live on all platforms.
