Oklahoma County Detention Center Reports 2nd Inmate Death This Week

The Oklahoma County Detention Center has reported the death of an inmate. This is the second death the jail has had within the week.

Authorities said shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, staff went to perform a mental health check at the inmate’s cell and found him unresponsive. Additional staff and medical were immediately requested and medical staff started CPR and called for an ambulance, the news release said.

The man was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead by a doctor at 10:25 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the man. They said he is 55 years old.  

The Detention Center Special Investigations Unit will investigate the circumstance leading up to his death. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will make a final determination as to the cause of death.

There have been at least 13 inmate deaths at the jail since July 2020.
