Tulsa's historic Vernon AME Church is $20,000 closer to some much-anticipated renovations.

The organization, Daughters of the American Revolution, gave a large donation to Pastor Robert Turner Wednesday, in the hopes of doing something good for the congregation.

"This means a lot to us here at Vernon, it really does," said Pastor Robert Turner.

Tulsa's Vernon AME Church is on an international stage because of the history of the building and the resilience of its members.

That story of perseverance is one Pastor Robert Turner wants reflected in the stained-glass windows of the Refuge Room, the basement of the church where people hid during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

"It is going to be a powerful testimony to the resilience and faith of this community," said Turner.

The church is now $20,000 closer to that vision becoming reality, thanks to the organization Daughters of the American Revolution- Oklahoma. They gave a check to Pastor Turner Wednesday.

"Their theme is historical preservation, education and patriotism," said State Regent Teresa Cales, Daughters of the American Revolution for Oklahoma.

The money will get the church most of the way towards paying for the stained-glass windows in the refuge room. The church is hoping a grant will help them pay for the rest of the Refuge Room space and complete the project.
