Something Good: 15-Year-Old Creates Food Pantry In Warr Acres

Deryk Doherty has been taught the lesson of giving back throughout his life. So, at 15 years old, when it came time for him to get his Eagle Scout badge, without a second thought he created a food pantry, and called it the Blessings Box. 

“The blessings box is something, me and many other volunteers and friends and family helped make, that will provide food for people in need,” said Doherty. 

The project served two purposes, to help Doherty become an Eagle Scout, but he also wanted to do it for his community. 

The box took about four days to make, with lots of help from family and friends. It’s located at the American Legion on Northwest 50th Street in Warr Acres. 

“It’s for anybody who needs it. Anybody no matter where they come from or how they are now, if they need it, they can take something from it,” said Doherty. 

It’s been stocked with food for about two weeks and Doherty knows it’s already making a difference. 

“We know that there are some users. I know because there are some things that I put in that I don’t see anymore.” Doherty said. 

Doherty is committed to keeping it stocked with food for at least the next year. The community is now getting behind The Blessings Box and others are adding food items. 

“If you need something take something, if you have something leave something,” said Doherty. 

Doherty still has some touch up work to be done on the Blessings Box, but he wanted to get it operational as soon as possible, simply because he feels the need is so great.
