Drivers on the Kilpatrick Turnpike no longer must stop and pay the toll if they don't have a PikePass.

Nothing will change for drivers with a PikePass, but if they don't have one, they'll be using the new system called Platepay.

It will read license plates as people drive by and they will then get a bill in the mail. All the old toll booths will be blocked off.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said the goal is to make it safer for drivers with this new system.

State Secretary of Transportation Tim Gatz said in the past six years, there have been more than 500 accidents at toll plazas across the state, including one last year involving an ambulance on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike near Newcastle.

Drivers without a PikePass will be paying higher fees.

For example, traveling on the Kilpatrick Turnpike from Interstate 35 to Interstate 40 would previously cost about $3 without a PikePass. Now, the bill in the mail will be $5.80.

"That increase is necessary to handle the handling charge and the processing of the license plate-based tolling," said Gatz.

People can pay the bill online or mail it in.

The state said the H.E. Bailey and Creek turnpikes will be converted to cashless in 2022 and they hope to expand it to every turnpike statewide by 2025.
