A California sex offender was arrested Thursday morning after trying to swim away from officers in the Oklahoma River, police said.

Police were called to conduct a welfare check near SW 15th and Portland Avenue.

When officers arrived, the man jumped into the Oklahoma River and tried to swim away from police.

Firefighters assisted police with a boat. Police officers were able to convince the man to stop swimming and be rescued.

Officers identified the man as 32-year-old Steven Young who had felony warrants out of California. He is accused of being in violation of the sex offender registry, a violent sex crime in California and several prior felony assaults in other states, police said.

Young was booked in the Oklahoma County jail where he is waiting to be extradited.
