Oklahoma health care leaders will have an update on Tuesday about the state's variant testing efforts.

Dr. George Monks with the Oklahoma State Medical Association said we're at the beginning of a third wave of COVID-19, fueled by the Delta variant.

Over the past week, Oklahoma's percentage of positive COVID tests ranks seventh in the nation and is trending upward.

Doctors said the Delta variant of the virus is the biggest threat because it's more infectious. It represents as much as 30% of new cases nationwide.

Monks posted on Twitter and said according to the CDC, Oklahoma is dead last in the nation for sequencing COVID tests for the mutation.

He continued, in part:

"We have very little understanding of just how prevalent the Delta Variant is in Oklahoma, due to the very small and inadequate amount of variant testing being done at the State level."
