A Canadian County judge ruled Friday that a Piedmont teenager charged with one count of first-degree rape will be tried as a juvenile.
The decision was made by Judge Charles Gass.
Piedmont police was notified of an alleged sexual assault March 21. The juvenile was formally charged in April.

At the conclusion of Friday’s hearing, Gass also said that “probable cause existed to show that the crime of rape in the first-degree occurred” in this case.
The juvenile will return to court July 22.
