School Is Out, Learning Still In: Inaugural Team Building Day At Sapulpa High

Even though school is out, some Green Country students are getting some unique lessons Wednesday, all while having a lot of fun.

Students and faculty huddled up for the inaugural Chieftain Team Building Day. 

Some group activities brought out the students' creative side, and others may have caused a few blushing faces. But Sapulpa senior Brooklyn Berry said the awkward moments build character.

"I think that getting out of your comfort zone and being able to open up to new people will allow them to feel more comfortable and then you build those relationships," Berry said. 

Sapulpa Athletic Director Michael Rose said he wanted to teach leadership and the benefits of getting out of your comfort zone to more than just athletes.

So, he created Team Building Day for all students to learn and connect through different activities. His hope is, at the very least, someone in the group makes a new friend. 

"They see someone on campus that they spend the day with, they had fun with them and there's a connection,” Rose said. “Takes maybe the edge of starting a new year off a little bit.”

Rose said the goal is to help students grow so they leave high school better than how they arrived.

"We want them to feel empowered, to get out of that comfort zone, to encourage others, to set the example," Rose said. 

Berry said she's been able to meet new people that she otherwise might not have met during the school year. She said she hopes the school continues Team Building Day for years to come.

"It gets a variety of people in the school to like come together and be more of a family and get to share that experience with each other," Berry said.
