A man accused of driving drunk led police on a chase through a Cleveland County campground.

Deputies said it started around 11 p.m. near the Little Axe Campground at Lake Thunderbird on May 25.

According to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Mclaughlin, 29, did not pull over for a traffic stop when a deputy reportedly noticed he was swerving all over the road on 156th Ave. NE.

“The vehicle failed to stop at that time,” said Mendi Brandon, spokeswoman for the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. “The driver accelerated their speed and veered into a ditch, kind of went off the roadway.”

Deputies said Mclaughlin smashed his truck through a campground fence at one point reaching speeds around 50 mph.

Those camping at the time were not in harm’s way.

“This was right towards the front of the campgrounds where the gate and booth was so there was no one there at that time,” said Brandon.

Deputies continued to chase Mclaughlin, who then again, smashed another campground fence.

“Once he got back onto 156th, he made a right-hand turn and lost control of the vehicle and then he ended up rolling into that intersection ending up in the ditch,” said Brandon.

Within seconds deputies helped Mclaughlin out of the truck and took him into custody.

There were no injuries.

“We know that it was a holiday weekend, and a lot of people were out at the lake, of course we want you to have fun but if you are going to be drinking, make sure that you have a way to get home, don’t get behind the wheel yourself,” said Brandon.

Mclaughlin faces several charges including driving with a revoked license. He is out of jail on a $15,000 bond.
