For Master’s student Christine Hoang, she knew very quickly that epidemiology was of a high interest to her.

"I feel like I have this new opportunity," Hoang said. "There is so much to learn, and going forward, I can help."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, no one would be surprised if it made her think twice about her chosen profession, but Hoang said it's time for her to step up.

Now, she looks at the past year as one of the best materials to study.

Hoang said she wants to help with research advancements and focus on combatting infectious diseases before it reaches the scale similar to COVID-19 did worldwide.

"I feel like I can combine what I have learned and what I have experienced and use that to prevent because that is what public health is all about," Hoang said.
