The Edmond Board of Education voted back in March to bring this bond issue to the voters. In total the bond is $65 million.

Edmond Public Schools Superintendent Bret Towne said many things in the bond are part of growing pains, with the district growing the most of any other in the state over the past 10 years.

“It is really one of those things you have to keep up and maintain to have a quality education,” said Towne.

The bond is made up of two propositions. The first one for things like school updates, curriculum and technology, while the second is for transportation needs, like buses.

“It has a large number of renovations in our older schools which are from 1990 and older,” said Towne.

Towne said the bond also helps two new elementary schools, Redbud and Scissortail, with future additions the district is already predicting will be necessary.

“Were expecting growth especially out at Redbud,” said Towne. “It is going to open full and need its addition fairly quickly.”

The money would also go towards replacing the old technology students have been using with new.

“This has been a hard year on technology on devices so it will be getting back on our replacement cycle,” said Towne. “Looking at those elementary ones that need to be replaced. It is also our wide area networks and infrastructure.”

The bond will be paid through property taxes.

“If your property taxes increase its because your home value is increasing not because we are raising taxes,” said Towne.

Towne said they are asking people to consider the projects and get to the polls.

“Good quality schools,” said Towne. “Well built schools, schools that are updated keep people’s property values up and draw others to the district.”

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
