A Del City mother is in jail after she was accused of forcing four children to live in filth.
Lashanda Butler was arrested Wednesday.
Neighbors were shocked at the secret on their street.
“It’s really heartbreaking and it makes me sad it was so close, and I just didn't know,” said neighbor Sierra Rodriguez.
“I always asked her if she needed something and she’d say ‘no,’” said neighbor Hidy Ek.
While Butler,27, is a mother to four children, ages 3, 4, 5, and 7, neighbors said they only caught glimpses of them.
“They never came outside,” said Ek.
“I never saw any activity over there,” said Rodriguez.
When police showed up to answer an inaudible 911 call, officers said they found Butler naked, intoxicated and screaming on her front lawn.
“Her ex-husband would come over, she'd call the cops on him, but he'd already called the cops on her,” said neighbor Norma Akers.
Once inside the house court records show officers found four naked children, ‘roaches throughout the residence, and a bathroom toilet filled with feces."
Behind the house, a mountain of dirty diapers.
“The backyard was full of soiled baby diapers that she was keeping to reuse later because she didn't have clean ones,” said Del City Police Major Bradley Rule.
“It really makes me emotional being a mother, having seven kids, five that I gave birth to. It’s just so sad,” said Rodriguez.
Records show the children were never enrolled in school and could not communicate.
“They were nonverbal and not able to speak with our officers,” said Rule. “As far as what would make a person think this is OK, I’m at a loss for words.”
Police arrested Butler on four complaints of child neglect.
A relative is now caring for the children.
