Heavy rain over the past 24 hours washed out a road along Highway 52 in McIntosh County.

On Highway 52 just north of Hanna, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is working on a new bridge over Mill Creek.

Because of the construction, drivers are taking a temporary detour road right next to it. Recent heavy rain flooded the detour, leaving folks there without their main route in and out of town.

ODOT said high water in Mill Creek washed over the road on Wednesday, sweeping away the portable barriers on either side.

Thursday, crews are working to get those barriers back in place, but ODOT said it will be a couple of days at least before the road can open up again.

They said once the water goes down, they will inspect the road to see if it’s safe to drive on again. They're also considering moving traffic onto the new bridge which they said is very close to being finished.

For now, folks in Hanna will have to take alternate routes, one of which is through the nearby town of Vernon.
