Students at Southern Nazarene University are meeting with the president over a potential policy that would prevent student athletes from kneeling during the national anthem.

The meeting starts at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Herrick Auditorium on campus.

This all started after some of the women's soccer team knelt during the national anthem at a few home games.

The women said it is a decision they made together.

After school administrators learned the women were kneeling during the anthem at games, meetings with university administration were scheduled including with SNU President Keith Newman.

Team members said the university's president asked the team not to kneel and mentioned a policy could be put in place preventing them from kneeling or protesting.

Newman said there is not a policy in place right now, and he hopes to work with the students to find a form of expression that's not what he calls "divisive."

Newman is expected to be at Wednesday night's meeting to talk with students and hear their concerns.

Students created a petition to support the option to kneel. As of Wednesday morning, it has more than 690 signatures.
