For the first time in the city of Wagoner’s history, a Black woman is serving on the city council.

Gayla Wright took the oath of office Monday and she will serve Ward 2.

In a statement, she said, “it’s not that I’m the first Black woman – it’s that my constituents saw something in me to be the servant to the people.”

Voters also elected Patrick Sampson to serve Ward 1.

Two reelected city councilors and the city’s treasurer were also sworn in for new terms.
