Police said a 17-year-old robbed a metro pharmacy at gunpoint with shoppers inside.

Officers surrounded the CVS Pharmacy located at the intersection of SW 89th Street and Western Avenue in Oklahoma City on February 26 after calls of it being robbed just before 3 p.m.

The teen suspect was arrested and charged this week. News 9 is not releasing the suspect’s name as he may be considered a youthful offender.

“It was a rather brazen robbery because there were a lot of people in the store. The store was open,” said MSgt. Gary Knight of the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Police said the suspect entered the store, first speaking to a pharmacy employee.

“He (the suspect) went into the store, asked about where a certain drug might be,” said Knight. “Whoever gave him direction apparently misunderstood him, they told him it was down a certain isle.”

The suspect left, then returned to the store again. This time he was armed with a pistol, police said.

“The suspect went into the store and actually hopped over the counter,” said Knight. “He was armed with a pistol, pointed it at the chest of one of the employees that was back there in the pharmacy and told them to get out of his way.”

The suspect, according to court records, is accused of stealing large amounts of drugs including cough syrup with codeine. He then allegedly told employees “I’m going to blow your ******* heads off” before leaving the store.

When asked why, the teen told investigators he wanted to sell the cough syrup to make money and give to his mother.

“The employees did everything right, they complied with the demands of the gunman,” said Knight. “We always encourage people to do that. Survive the event, that way they can pass on the information to us. There is nothing in that store worth losing your life over.”

The suspect has a prior armed robbery conviction.

It’s still unclear whether he’ll be charged as an adult or juvenile.
