It's a special day for medical students at OU College of Medicine. After a year of virtual learning, interviewing, and other major changes, they are now celebrating in-person as they find out their next steps in becoming a doctor.

"In just a few weeks, actually, they are going to get their MD degree and entering the next phase of their life," said John Zubialde, the Dean of OU College of Medicine.

But before the degree is added to their list of accomplishments— each student got to hold a slip of paper determining their future.

"I am a registered nurse. I worked at a hospital here in town for four years in the ICU," said Christina Jacob, a fourth-year student at OU College of Medicine.

For Christina Jacobs, it was a change of events as she was settled into life, but it's never too late to change dreams as Jacobs watched her husband work his way through medical school.

"I got to watch the whole process and decided it was something I wanted to do," said Jacobs.

Now Jacobs will get to study internal medicine next to her husband at the University of Oklahoma as he works on his fellowship.

"It's messed with everyone's lives," said Jacobs.

"It has undoubtedly changed the way they learned and the style," said Zubialde.

As COVID changed the parts of the college of medicine, it did not stop these medical students from getting into the best institutions across the country with one hope from the OU college of medicine.

"Many of those will bring their knowledge back to Oklahoma. We are going to get to really benefit from their experiences," said Zubialde.
