A multicounty chase involving a suspected stolen truck lead to two innocent people killed and another injured near 21st and Garnett Thursday afternoon.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the investigation began 15 miles from the crash, when a young suspect stole a truck, and witnesses flagged down a trooper for help.

Surveillance video from Fast Wash in Coweta showed a car with at least four people, possibly teenagers, pulling up next to a truck with a man vacuuming around 12:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

"They didn't even go through the car wash,” said Chad Wise, general manager of Fast Wash Car Wash. “It was all staged. They were just waiting for the right guy and the right moment, and they took advantage of it."

Wise told News On 6 about eight minutes later, when the man left the truck running to put away used towels, one of the guys drove off in the truck. The man tried to stop the thief, then witnesses waved down a trooper.

Video from a witness near 81st and Highway 51 in Wagoner County showed the pickup running a red light with law enforcement right behind.

Trooper Eric Foster said the chase lasted about 15 minutes and stop sticks were used, but the suspect drove around them.

"We don't know what's the reason they don't want to have contact with law enforcement, and so it is a dangerous situation to everybody involved, and that's why we have to stop it as soon as possible," said Foster.

The chase ended tragically near 21st and Garnett. The fleeing truck crashed into the side of an SUV, killing two people and injuring another inside.

A neighbor's security camera captured the suspect running at the scene moments after.

"The boy was on the ground, and he's screaming in pain,” said Muhammad Jawaid, who works nearby at a convenience store.

News On 6 was also there when the young suspect was handcuffed and walked to an ambulance. Those living and working near the crash scene told News On 6 they are heartbroken for those involved.

“Two lives are worth a lot more than a truck,” said Debbie Scott. “Those families are going to be devastated, and I feel for them."

The suspect was the only one in the truck during the chase. Troopers have not released names of anyone involved in the crimes or identified any of the victims.
