Police said it responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call near Western Avenue & Main Street just before 7 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the altercation began outside a dispensary where two men, one of them a store employee, were involved in a physical altercation.

The two men then went inside the dispensary where the situation escalated. The store employee shot the man in the upper chest.

The victim was identified as a man in his 20’s. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigators said they're not sure if he is from the area.

What they do know is he did not work at the dispensary and the person who shot him is a store employee.

“Inside the store, one of the employees or somebody inside the store, produced a handgun,” OCPD Capt. Rod Stricker said. “Shots were fired inside the store.”

The shooter is not hurt, but it is still unclear how the two men knew each other or why the altercation started.
