Police identified the man and the officer who reportedly exchanged gunfire on Saturday in northeast Oklahoma City.
Officer Branden Downs, a four-year veteran of the department, responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 4900 block of N Missouri Avenue near NE 50th and Martin Luther King Avenue.
When he arrived, police said Joel Lewis, 63, standing inside the doorway of the home.
Police said Lewis had a pistol and fired at Downs, hitting him in the chest and left hand.
Downs was wearing a ballistic vest which helped stop the bullet. Downs shot back at Lewis and hit him in the leg, police said.
Lewis barricaded himself in the home for nearly 15 minutes and later surrendered to police on the scene.
Downs and Lewis were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Downs was released after receiving treatment for his left hand.
Lewis is still the hospital and will be taken to the Oklahoma County jail when released by medical staff.
Downs is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
