Broken Arrow Police Warn Of Rise In Catalytic Converter Thefts

Broken Arrow Police said there is a rise in catalytic converter thefts across the nation, including the Tulsa metro. After a rise in these catalytic converter thefts in Broken Arrow, police are patrolling while actively trying to prevent these crimes.

Officer Chris Walker, Broken Arrow Police, told News On 6 the uptick is likely because precious metals are being sold for high dollar amounts at scrap yards and recycle centers. Officer Walker said the crime only takes a couple of minutes to commit.

“Good advice would be to park in a well-lit area and have a security system not only on your vehicle but also a camera system at your house,” said Officer Walker. “That’s how we catch a lot of them and we’ve posted several of them on social media.”

Officer Walker said it is hard to find the people responsible unless they are caught in the act because catalytic converters do not have identification numbers on them. He said some people wouldn’t even notice one was stolen until after turning their car on.
