Neighbors, Community Rallies To Help Senior Residents During Power Outages Caused By Ice Storm

Many state senior living centers are coping with little to no power due to the recent storms. News 9’s Barry Mangold visited one senior apartment in Guthrie where residents are working together to make it through.

On Wednesday, residents of the Villas of Benedictine Pointe, a senior living apartment building, braced for their second night without power.

“Our apartments are cold. Our windows are frozen over so we can't even see outside. I think it's absolutely miserable,” said Jean Schlagal, a resident at the Villas. “I’m 92 and being cold is not really good for me.”

The building lost power Tuesday morning. A generator is powering the fifth floor and the building’s elevators.

Residents and guests, who are there to recharge devices and enjoy a heated room, are gathering in the ‘community room’ on the fifth floor, one of the only non-apartment rooms with power in the building.

Two residents are reliant on oxygen tanks and have little to no reserves. Should the generator go out, Kathy Marron said she would lose access to oxygen within hours.

“If I stay real quiet and calm, I’m okay. But… any exertion will… It’s harder to breathe,” Marron said.

A church dropped off enough food to make for two meals for each resident. Others have dropped off other supplies throughout the day, residents said.

“This was one hum-dinger of a storm. I've never seen anything like this here,” said resident Bill Fisher.
