October is breast cancer awareness month, and one woman is urging other young women to go get tested.

"I was diagnosed May of 2018, and I thought, 'well, I’ve noticed cysts in my breasts, I won't have to worry about this,'” Chelsee Wilson said.

Wilson said even her doctors didn't seem too worried.

"My doctor said, 'It's more than likely a cyst. You're 29. Let's air on the side of caution,'" Wilson said.

But things quickly took a turn for the worse. Within a day, Wilson had an ultrasound, a mammogram and a biopsy.

"Twenty-four hours later, they called me and said it was invasive carcinoma," she said.

OU Medicines' Dr. Wajeeha Razaq called it an aggressive breast cancer diagnosis.

"At that point, she had a stage two disease,” Razaq said.

"I sobbed. I actually don't remember everything that was said to me," Wilson said.

For more than three months, Wilson received heavy doses of chemo, then radiation. She even faced a major blood clot.

"She was very scared and cried at almost every appointment,” Razaq said.

"Then I had a double mastectomy, two weeks after my 30 birthday and first wedding anniversary,” Wilson said.

Wilson said she was able to work through the treatment, and 2 years later, she's finally in remission.

But there's always the fear that the cancer could come back.

"That's always in the back of your mind when you've been diagnosed with cancer. Is that my shoulder hurting or is that my back?” Wilson said.

Wilson said on the upside, cancer has changed her life perspective for the better.

Wilson wants to make sure other women know her story and her message.

"Go to the doctor, stay on top of your health. It's better to catch anything earlier than wait," she said.

Razaq recommends that women always self-check their breasts and if you find a lump, get it evaluated.

She also encourages mammograms every year after age 40.
