From Beantown to Chi-town, Rocky to Rockne, The Great American Relay has covered some ground.

"We are running from Boston to Santa Monica California," said Vince Varallo.

Varallo is the organizer of this coast to coast relay run. News 9 caught up with him in Edmond as the relay made its way down Route 66 on its way to the Golden State.

The Great American Relay is 900 runners strong, 3,800 miles long, and is raising money for the American Association for Cancer Research.

Varallo has been following the run every step of the way in his rental car.

"Unlimited miles, I checked, I made sure," he said.

He makes stops every ten miles when the baton is exchanged from one group to the next.

"I get to talk to the locals, it's all local runners, and I'm having the best time of my life right now. It's great," Varallo said.

For the OKC running group, the relay is a shot in the arm for their restless legs.

"Between all of us, we've probably had 100 races canceled, with the eleven people that were out there," said Jeff Wagner of Oklahoma City Landrunners.

"It was important for me to just let people know that running's not canceled," Varallo said.

"It just brings everybody together, it's a common theme, common goal of just being healthy," Wagner said.

The race will wrap up in Santa Monica on October 21.
