OKCPS Discusses County Infection Rate, Return To School Dates

More changes could be coming to the Oklahoma City Public School's plan to bring kids back into the classroom.

For now, pre-K and kindergartners are scheduled to return on a staggered A and B schedule on October 19.

Superintendent Sean McDaniel says if Oklahoma County doesn't stay within orange level 1, or below on the state board of education's COVID-19 alert map, the return date for pre-k and kindergarteners will be pushed back to November 9, the same as all other OKC students.

Oklahoma County is at orange level 1 right now, which is about 25 cases per 100,000 people.

The superintendent says if Oklahoma County ever jumps into the red alert level, OKCPS will immediately go back to all virtual.

"In the State Department of Ed, to go from orange level 2 to red, it has to do with the number of cases per 100,000. That is at 50," said McDaniel.

McDaniel says if any families would like to stick to the virtual learning option this year, the deadline to opt in is Tuesday. He also says for parents to please call their student's school for more information.
