The Center for Disease Control and Prevention discourages kids from trick-or-treating for Halloween this year.

The CDC said activities like going door-to-door for candy and attending crowded parties could lead to COVID-19 outbreaks. They said there are also issues with haunted houses if people are in close quarters.

The CDC recommends staying away from others, even in outdoor venues.

“Things like screaming, yelling, talking loudly that are often taking place during Halloween, because of haunted houses or scary movies can actually lead to airborne transmission of the virus,” Dr. Jill Weatherhead, Assistant Professor of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine said.

Experts said families should consider safer alternatives like carving pumpkins at home or spread-out scavenger hunts.
