Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce will meet with the city council Monday to discuss COVID-19 precautions on game days.

The mayor said Saturday's Tulsa-Oklahoma State football game will help the city decide what needs to be done next in the city's response to COVID-19.

Students at the game said they are working to follow these precautions to see their Cowboys play.

"Ever since I got on campus, I have worn a mask, so I think that is pretty well done," Oklahoma State University junior student Hohler Goatcher said.

"It is a really different first year of college," OSU freshman student Laryssa Perry said.

Full stadium capacity at Boone Pickens Stadium is over 55,000 for a typical football Saturday. However, only 14,000 fans, or approximately 25 percent of the stadium’s full capacity, were allowed in the stands.

Stillwater also has bars and restaurants at 25 percent seating capacity. Masks are also required whether in inside or outside spaces.

"They have taken precautions. They have spread out the seats, so they have done what they have needed to do to keep us safe," Perry said.

"I usually tailgate before games, and today I did not, so I think that is a pretty big precaution," Goatcher said.

As the Cowboys kicked off at 11 a.m. Saturday, Joyce said what was seen for a morning kickoff could be different later this football season.

"With the game time being early, it would be different than it would be if it were a night game,” Joyce said.

Joyce said officials will continue to study the weekend's events to best direct the city's health needs.

"We really wanted to get a sense of what this is going to look like and what the problem areas might be if there are going to be some," Joyce said.
