State To Investigate Self-Regulated Pipeline After Explosion

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission will investigate a pipeline explosion that caused a massive fireball to erupt in Kingfisher County, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday. News 9's Barry Mangold has the story.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission will investigate a pipeline explosion that caused a massive fireball to erupt in Kingfisher County, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday. 

The pipeline, owned by DCP Midstream, released gas near the intersection of North Piedmont Road and Waterloo Road. around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Piedmont Fire Department. No injuries and no significant damage to property or wildlife was reported. 

Representatives of both the state Corporation Commission and the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said they do not actively regulate the pipeline. 

Although the commission does not perform routine inspection, the agency has the authority to investigate because an incident occurred.

The blaze left behind a crater, prompting authorities to close Waterloo. 

Jason Orr, the Piedmont City Manager, said, "We anticipate the road being open for travel by noon tomorrow (Friday).”
