Oklahoma City Public Schools could see some students return to class soon.

The tentative plan is for students to return to a staggered A and B schedule on September 21, only three weeks into the school year.

District leaders could possibly move that date in Tuesday morning’s meeting.

Half the students from Pre-K and Kindergarten will come Monday and Tuesday, there would be virtual learning for everyone on Wednesdays, and then the other half would come Thursday and Friday.

The district says there would never be more than nine kids in the classroom at a time. Class sizes for these Pre-K and Kindergarten students usually range from around 10 to 16 students.

If this plan goes smoothly, the district says then they would incrementally bring back all students on the same schedule plan.

For high schoolers, November 9 would be the earliest possible date.

During the nearly three hour board meeting Monday night, some members showed concern about giving both teachers and students only one week to prepare for a physical return.

Superintendent Sean McDaniel says he will propose changing the return date to the September 28 at Tuesday morning's meeting.

“What we think we need to do is put this in place and manage it. If we do not get the outcomes we anticipate, then we shut it back down,” he said.

McDaniel says with the districts plan, schools would be deep cleaned on Wednesday's when no students are inside.
