Oklahoma State University's athletic department announced Wednesday that it will make cuts to its staff and 2020-21 athletic budget due to COVID-19, effective immediately.

Athletic Director Mike Holder said the department's reductions will be in the form of furloughs, layoffs and salary reductions that will affect 232 of 241 department employees. The other nine positions within the department will remain vacant at this time.

Ten people were laid off Wednesday while 66 other employees will be furloughed starting Sept. 16. Another 151 employees will have their salaries reduced later this month.

The total effects of the reductions will "remove approximately $13 million" from Oklahoma State's 2020-21 athletic budget.

According to the university, Holder and every head coach in the department have agreed to voluntary pay cuts.

An OSU spokesperson told News 9 Wednesday afternoon that any potential cut to an OSU sport within the department would be an "absolute last resort."
