Spencer Rattler will be OU's starting quarterback when the Sooners take to the field in a few weeks, OU head football coach Lincoln Riley said.

The announcement comes a few weeks before the 2020 football season is set to start.

Sooner fans did not have a chance to see Rattler or Tanner Mordecai unofficially try out for the starting position after the spring scrimmage game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rattler is a redshirt freshman who saw action in three games in 2019. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. He ran three times for 23 yards.

Riley said the decision was anything but normal.

He said he was disappointed to see Mordecai miss 75% of the fall camp and miss out on "true opportunities to play his best ball."

Mordecai is a redshirt sophomore and played in six games in 2019 as the primary backup to starter Jalen Hurts.
