September will be a critical month for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

Hunger Action Month will be their call to action to make Oklahomans aware of food insecurities statewide.

“Really just an opportunity to elevate the conversation about hunger in our state,” Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma Strategic Communications Director Cathy Nestlen said.

Officials said the conversation about food insecurities is difficult but putting a spotlight on the situation is a way to raise awareness.

“Unfortunately, Oklahoma is a high hungry state,” Nestlen said. “We rank fifth hungriest state in the country.”

One in 6 Oklahoma adults does not know where their next meal will come from.

“One in four children in Oklahoma are considered food insecure,” Nestlen said.

The COVID-19 pandemic is hurting a lot of the progress they have been working towards.

Feeding America is averaging the numbers in Oklahoma could be to 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 3 children are food insecure. Those numbers come out to about 215,000 Oklahomans facing hunger.

“We have seen a 30 percent increase since late March in the need of food assistance with new houses and new people needing food,” Nestlen said.

With Hunger Action Month, they are planning events for people to get involved and help those in need.

“September 10th is Hunger Action Day. We encourage everyone to wear the color orange. Orange is the color of hunger,” Nestlen said.
