Multiple metro districts are pivoting to distance learning as the number of students testing positive for COVID-19 continues to rise.

Edmond Public Schools announced Friday two teachers at Cross Timbers Elementary were both in quarantine following their positive tests. Enid Public Schools said Saturday 29 students and staff across the district tested positive for COVID-19.

“With opening of schools, primary, secondary, and college campuses, I have real concerns that we could see new spikes in the number of cases in Oklahoma,” OU Med Chief COVID-19 Officer Dr. Dale Bratzler said.

Health officials said they're continuing to research the spread of the virus within these districts in hopes of keeping it contained.

“Kids get infected and they can spread the virus to other,” Dr. Bratzler said. “Both to other kids but also to older people.”

Seminole Public Schools said a self-contained class as well as an entire grade level will move to distance learning starting Monday. Little Axe Public Schools will move to distance learning after a high school student tested positive and a number of staff members started experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

Dr. Bratzler said the United States surpassed 406,000 confirmed cases in children during the last week.

“There have been several studies that have shown though they're not as likely to get infected as adults,” Dr. BRatzler said. “When they do get infected, they shed a lot of virus.”

Due to a significant number of cases in Payne County, Stillwater Public Schools announced Sunday they will also move to distance learning starting on Tuesday.

The University of Oklahoma will start classes on Monday. The school announced one positive case in their dorms.
