Union Public Schools parents and teachers are split on distance learning.

This week, Union Classroom Teachers Association President Deena Churchill sent a letter to the board on behalf of teachers, saying in part, "I have never encountered such crushing anxiety and terror among such a large group of people" and "Many teachers have expressed to me they are considering quitting if we return to in-person."

The union is asking its teachers to fill out a survey this weekend so they can present their response to the board on Monday. Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler is recommending the board approve distance learning for an undetermined amount of time. The school district says it's because health leaders are overwhelmingly saying it's the smartest decision.

Many parents agree with the proposal, but others are torn.

"It'll be tough for parents," said mom Sara Covey. "I'm lucky enough I've got a job."

Parent Sara Covey said her daughter Abigail, who is going into 2nd grade, is desperate to go back to class.

"I love seeing my friends and I love learning-- it's really fun," Abigail said. "I don't like doing it at home. I don't get to see my friends."

Covey said she would like to see the district try out class in-person and according to a recent district survey, 67% of parents also want to see in-person class with safety measures in place.

"They've worked so hard on this plan they have to give it a try and see how it works," said Covey.

The board meets Monday night at 7.
