The Canadian County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Michael Brooks was arrested on complaints of forcible sodomy and lewd acts with a child under the age of 16. Investigators said Brooks lived in the house with the victim and the victim's mother, who reported the crimes. Others in the community, including school officials filed reports over their concerns for the child's welfare.
“It took one phone call for us,” said Chris West, Canadian County Sheriff. “The mother calls the sheriff’s office and we acted; we got the ball rolling.”
During interviews, investigators said the female victim described the abuse that she said happened every night for a year. Sheriff Chris West said one of his main goals is to protect as many children as possible.
“The number one priority for me is protection of children and I think that should be the number one priority of everybody,” said West.
The sheriff's office said the victim's mother claims she did not know about the abuse until she reported it. Sheriff West also said his office was alerted the mother started a GoFundMe page describing that her child needs money because she was a victim of sexual abuse.
“So, the main reason the GoFundMe account was put up is because 90 percent of the clothes that the victim had were provided by the abuser,” said West.
Officials said they’re continuing to investigate this incident. They said the victim as well as other children in the home are now in state custody.
“When I find out that something like that is going on and we send our deputies out, we want to make sure that child is going to be living in a safe environment,” said West.
Brooks is being held at the Canadian County jail with no bond.
