The University of Oklahoma hosted virtual graduation in May for their 2020 graduates, but they hoped to have an in-person celebration in August, however the event has been moved to May 2021.

"I definitely didn't think going into spring break that we would not be coming back," said Sam Brown, a 2020 graduating senior.

Two months later, there is just another change.

"It is just another obstacle along the way," said Brown. "May 2021 will come eventually hopefully sooner rather than later. If we are lucky, we can make plans and get back to Norman."

As reality changes again, walking across the stage in 2021 might be the last way 2020 seniors can officially end their journey.

"Although we were able to honor our graduates in a virtual commencement ceremony last spring, we look forward to providing them with the traditional celebration they deserve in May 2021," said OU's President Joseph Harroz.

As Spring 2020 graduation was set to be held in August, University Chief COVID Officer Dr. Dale Bratzler, helped OU explore the idea of having an outdoor graduation with safety measures like wearing masks, but they decided the summer heat and the duration of the event would have increased heat-related health risks for graduates and their guests.

An OU spokesperson said there is no change to the December graduation at this time.
